AAPI news anchor sitting at desk

In the early 1980’s it seemed every major television news market (and many minor ones as well) had an Asian American woman in the anchor chair. But there were no AAPI men. Even in Hawaii, with its majority AAPI population, there were no AAPI men in the news market. Read about the history behind this phenomenon in this 1986 San Francisco Chronicle Datebook cover story.

Three decades later, the issue persists. According to this 2016 VOA article, AAPI presence in TV news has declined overall and continues to be underrepresented; regardless, Asian American women still outnumber men in the anchor chair and in decision-making news positions.
